Magic - An Import Wizard for SharePoint

Magic is a stand alone application that allows you to import data from various sources into a SharePoint list. It also allows you to transfer list data from one SharePoint site to another with ease! Its goal is to provide a very easy and intuitive way for content managers, site administrators, and SharePoint power users to get large amounts of data into a SharePoint list without having to manually enter the data or use some other more technical solution.

On occasion you may have a large amount of data that you would like to store in a SharePoint list. In some cases this data may even be in a different SharePoint site or stored in a totally different version of SharePoint. Magic - An Import Wizard for SharePoint makes importing this data into your SharePoint list a simple, straight forward process - a process that is very similar to an Import process that you are already familiar with in other common applications such as the Microsoft Office suite.

  • Easy and intuitive interface makes importing data into SharePoint easy.
  • Import data from Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Access, Microsoft SQL Server, text files, even other versions of SharePoint.
  • Drag and drop interface allows for combining fields and adding your own custom data.
  • No need to make data connections or write complicated queries using Excel or Access. Magic does all this heavy lifting for you!

Zero Impact Installation

Magic leverages the web services provided by SharePoint itself. This allows it to run independently of your SharePoint environment. If you have access to the internet and your SharePoint sites via your browser, you can use Magic to import your data - as long as you have the access to do so in SharePoint.

  • Magic is a stand alone application that does not require any installation on your SharePoint servers.
  • Works with SharePoint 2003, SharePoint 2007, and SharePoint 2010.

Here's how Magic works:

  • First choose your data source.

You can import data from an Excel spreadsheet, an Access or SQL database table or view, a flat file or delimited text file, or even another SharePoint list. You can even use Magic to transfer list data from one SharePoint site to another - even to different versions of SharePoint!

  • Then enter your SharePoint credentials.

Magic leverages the SharePoint services and API's provided by SharePoint and therefore uses the same security and authentication model that SharePoint uses. That means Magic respects and is bound by the security inherint in SharePoint. So the same access and rights you have in SharePoint will be the access and privledge you have with Magic. If a user has read only access to list data, they will not be able to use Magic to import any data to that list.

  • Select a SharePoint list.

Once access to your SharePoint site has been established you can browse your site and list hierarchy to find the list you want to import your data into.

  • Set up your column mappings.

Match fields or columns from your source data to fields in your SharePoint list using an easy drag and drop interface. You can even combine fields and add your own values. For example if you're importing data from an Excel spreadsheet that has a column for a first name and a seperate column for a last name you can combine these into one field in SharePoint. You can even add a space between them using the special Field Seperator tool.

  • Analyze the results.

Sit back, relax, and watch as Magic imports your data. When it's done it will provide you with a detailed report so you can verify that all your data imported successfully. The report is line by line for each line in your source data so you can easily address any problems that may have occurred during the import process.
